« November Man of the Month: Dr Jahan! »

Dr. M Shah Jahan, Professor and Chair, Department of Physics, Director IUCB/Memphis and long standing member of Mas Macho is the November 2006 Mas Macho Man of the Month. Dr. Jahan received his M.Sc. in Physics in 1965 from Rajshahi University, Bangladesh, and Ph.D. in Solid State Radiation Biophysics in 1977 from the University of Alabama.

He was a US AID Fellow in 1968, and he received Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship in 1972-1977. Before joining the University of Memphis in 1980, Dr. Jahan worked as a Visiting Professor at the University of Khartoum, Sudan from 1977-1979, a Visiting Scientist at University of Leiden, the Netherlands in 1978, and as a Research Associate at the University of Alabama in 1980. In 1988-1990, he was a Visiting Staaff at Los Alamos National laboratory, New York.

His research includes, but is not limited to, characterization of defects in solids and radiation effects in organics and biomaterials. In collaboration with medical industries for the last 15 years, he has done extensive work on the effects of gamma sterilization on orthopaedic implant components. As of 2001, he upgraded his Biomaterials Research Laboratory with a cutting edge radical analyzer (ESR spectrometer), UV-VIS-NIR spectrometer, and Thermoluminescence apparatus. And who thought macho men weren't smart?
